wood identification challenge

so I was passing my favourite sawmill on the way home today and I popped in to see what was in the hardwood offcuts bin. I picked up a nondescript dirty brown piece of plank for 50p, on the off chance it was something magical. I cut off a bit and quickly sanded/polished (hence some sawmarks still visible) it, and it did this.

It doesn't come off very well in the photo, but it's a really shiny coppery-gold colour, flecked with these dark marks, it's absolutely stunnning.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

Ha, a mob log, possibly Iroko?

We have iroko worktops in the kitchen, but this is much lighter in colour, much more golden and the grain is different.

It almost looks like metal in the sun.

There's an app for that:

It does look familiar to me. I am now thinking hard.

I do not have an iDevice I can run that on, and there does not appear to be an Android version.

I've looked through quite a few photos, but nothing is leaping out.

It's likely to be something a bit obscure/rare, because it's a rather specialist kind of place. It might be some form of palm, the grain is a bit palmy.

I feel like I've seen something with that sort of grain and the shine of the light and dark. But if I remember the object, that probably doesn't really help identify the wood.

Have you looked at the wood ID site Hobbitthouse.inc ?

mat says:

My goodness that site is comprehensive.

I wonder if it's jacareuba or mengkulang. So hard to tell from photos.
