Thanks Twiglet, thanks Rys. I took it this afternoon, it's a very algae-fied pond with trees growing out of it. Puts me in mind of one of those barren mangrove swamps. The title "silent spring" came up a couple of times last week, once as the book title and once as a song title. So I borrowed it!

Interesting your use of the word primaeval Viv. Parts of Surrey, particularly Morden and Sutton and their inhabitants could definitely be compared to conditions that existed at or even pre the dawn of time...
