Display Boxes

Trying out some display boxes. I really do have quite an attachment to
matchboxes. They've always felt a bit more precious than the
disposable item they really are. As most of you know they've featured
heavily in my work before, I guess this idea of presenting them is
just an extention of that.
I really should just be getting on with making the silver though
because at this rate I'm going to have very little to sell.

thanks! I'd love some canadian ones, though I'd need to put them away and age them!

I should probably just stick to matchboxes. but chh. You can't sell them for much.

I have a large collection of matchboxes!

this last lot I got wasn't as good as the first lot, the first lot had loads of boxes from around the world and cruises, this lot is mainly from seaside towns and working mens clubs, which sounds romantic in itself but the imagery on the front is tantamount to bad clip art and I prefer the typographical stuff on matt card, colours are much nicer.

I like the ribbon pull.

Yeh I'd done a present for someone with these ribbon pulls on. there's just something really *nice* about that attached to the box.. something delicate. I dunno. I might investigate other ways of making things precious too..

Actually, we've just done a brief that references Susan Collis - you'd probably like her work. http://www.seventeengallery.com/index.php?p=2&id;=16&iid;=2 "don't get your hopes up" is showing in sheffield at the moment, I'd love to see it.

nige says:

Oh, I do. That's a great space too.

The matchboxes do seem more precious with the ribbon pulls. Not sure why, perhaps it's just juxtaposing something old and throwaway with the something shiny and sensual to the touch. Completely opposite to matches themselves. Not sure.

How did you do the felt inlays? they look fiddly.

beth says:

with some fiddling! It's crushed velvet of some kind or other not felt though :P

Caine says:

Oh, I like this so much. I'm a complete sucker for odd little boxes of all kinds, and odd little tins too. I don't see box matches nearly enough, it's mostly match books here.

i suppose they're a dying thing these days.

I imagine so; I find that sad.

I love little boxes too. Matchboxes are special because they contain fire. That's kind of magical in itself.
