Want to find out about proteins? Try this for starters -
RCSB Protein data bank: Molecule of the Month in alphabetical order
Want to find out what is known about any particular gene? Here's a good place to start. -
Entrez Gene This is probably my favourite starting point for finding out about a new gene of interest and has handy links to most of the references and sequence information.
Want to find a piece of peer-reviewed scientific research? Want to check the references from an article, or look up the publication record of an expert quoted in a newspaper or blog piece? Try this database. It will give you the abstract (outline) of every paper and will link to the full thing and tell you which articles are free and open-access. -
NCBI's PubMed All newly published research is quickly added to this site.
Want to be able to decode DNA? This is how DNA codes for protein, and is, to my eyes, a thing of beauty. -
The Genetic Code (presented here as RNA. For DNA, simply replace the U's with T's (Uracil with Thymine)).
And for geeks who need to get out more :) -

There's a complete Flumps DVD? Joy.
You look to have planned well for this trip of his. :)
It is currently incredibly cheap on Amazon UK too!
I will be doing lots of work stuff too (honest) :)
Oh that reminds me of an unfinished project I have something you will like :) Must finish it!
Have fun
I quite enjoy Ben Goldacre, will be interested to see what you think
I love The Flumps, very jealous. I must look for my Mr Benn dvd for consolation.
Tea & books. Good for body and mind. Ben Goldacre's book is terrific.
Well, I think you have yourself well sorted there, but I think I might add choccie biccies or cake to the mix :)
The flumps are just the thing right now :)
I'm just over half way through the Ben Goldacre book and I wholeheartedly agree with Caine. I'm not usually one for reading factual books in my spare time but this is a real page-turner and very well put. Especially since now I am one of those people adding compounds x, y, and z to cells in a dish and (hopefully soon to be) reporting what happens in academic journals. It's terrifying the way research is presented/misrepresented by the media, 'gurus', drug companies, even well- meaning but wrong people and plain old bad scientists.
I bought an extra copy as a leaving present for my project student.
Thanks Maggie! Chocolate digestives, courtesy of Poppet, now being dunked in tea :)
don't you go giving me any of that Yorkshire rubbish when i come avisiting!
Oh I did. I really did! Honest :)
Don't worry, you can watch flumps too.
You still have chocolate digestives left! No wonder you are both so skinny :-)
