Ah come on, it was alright. The petunias glancing off the windscreen was particularly satisfying.
I enjoyed it. Ok, so it wont be remembered come oscar time, but it made me laugh and entertained me for a couple of hours.
I won't be going to see it. I've heard enough things about it that I don't want to spend money to see it.
Give it a chance, honestly, it's a laugh.
I'll probably download it to watch. I really don't wanna spend money on it cause it doesn't sound like i'll like it.
Well I liked it, given that it's a pretty impossible thing to turn into a film they gave it as good a stab as could be expected. Zaphod was good, Trillian has joined the massed ranks of my future wives, the special effects were effective and Mos Def wasn't totally awful. It really made me wish that they'd remade the TV series with those production values, though. That would have rocked nads.
Its not the changes that worry me. A majority of the story is DA's screenplay. What worries me, and I've not heard good things about, is the delivery. I've seen the tv series and i loved it. In my mind, that's what it has to live up to and from what I've heard, it hasn't even come close.
Mmm, well, I guess if you want to base your opinions on what other people think then that's your right, personally I always want to make up my own mind on these matters.
Normally I wouldn't. But I asked trusted friends who's opinions I trust on this one cause I've been a bit dubious about it for a while now.
Even still, when all that's at stake is, what, five pounds and 90 minutes of your life? And you get to see a pretty good reimagining of an old favorite as well? Does not compute.
Evidence for: New Zaphod is good. Old Zaphod, on the whole, is pretty shit, and not just the head. New Trillian is infinitely less irritating than Sandra Dickinson, OK so Ford isn't so great, but he does kinda work, Martin Freeman makes a good Arthur, the interior of the Heart of Gold is fantastic, and most of the jokes are pretty good, and the delivery was fine from where I was sitting. Of course you don't know or trust me so it'll count for nothing, I just think it's worth a chance is all. Plus you'll be giving money to Douglas's family, which is almost certainly what he would have wanted. If I'm a fan of something I always want to support them with my hard earned readies rather than pirate it, it's only fair.
Well ya see if I like it, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't feel like I've wasted my money. If I like it I may even go see it in the cinema.
It wouldn't be jsut 5 pounds. It'd be 10 for the movie (hubby and me) plus another 10 for getting to Basingstoke (I live in a village) to see it. Plus likely another 10 for food cause we'll likely be hungry.
If I don't like it, I won't keep the file anyhow.
Ahhh, well, that's OK then, my righteous ire has been extinguished ;D
I'm glad I could apease the angry Rich god. Thank you almighty one for your forgiveness
:o)
I think Mos Def was better than the TV Ford (though less good than the radio one). Simon Jones was a better Arthur than Martin Freeman, but both are good. Zaphod in the film was better than Zaphod in the TV series, but less good than the radio show (odd, as the last two were both Mark Wing-Davey). Overall, I think the film was pretty good, but it had been Disnefied and lost some of the cynicism that was its hallmark. Ah well. There will undoubtedly be sequels...
Whoever played Trillian was rubbish apart from that i didnt think it was that bad - what do you expect from a movie of the DA books you just cant translate that to screen - Anyhow if your a DA fan you might want to look at "his" playlist on the iTunes store - Or not ....
See you around
I like how Mat hasnt actually come back to expound on his two word capsule review - not really like him, so he mustve really disliked it to not even say why.
finally back online, can update this:
Marvin = excellent (original Marvin cameo - inspired)
HoG = excellent
Slartibartfast = excellent
Tribute to the simpsons with the rake/face/slapping joke = excellent
Petunias = excellent
Vogons = excellent
Stephen Fry = excellent, but under-used.
Magrathean workshop floor = stunning.
Ford, Zaphod = not Cool. They're supposed to be Cool, in not necessarily likeable. They were just annoying.
Ford = just not funny. MosDef might be a good actor, but he doesn't have the comic timing required for this part. Also, the jokes aren't as funny in an American accent. (same goes for Zaphod.) Apologies to the the US contingent here, it's nothing personal :)
Love Interest? With actual resolution and everything? Please.
Insertion of stock Hollywood plotline and Happy Ending(TM) = enough to make me nearly walk out in disgust. I hate hollywood endings.
Trillian = annoying.
The worst thing? The absolute worst thing? The fact that, as Stephen Fry said "the words 'Don't Panic' printed in large reassuring letters on the front", the book span to show that it was actually printed on the back.. :)
I have just had to endure "The Wedding Date"
I feel like i've had my brain raped by a horse.
I thought he said that the words "Don't Panic" were printed "on the cover", which puzzled me a bit.. but then I just theorised that the back of the book is actually part of the cover (and chastised myself for not automatically knowing/thinking this).
It was alright, made me laugh. Not a screen play I would envy being in charge of. Might have changed the cast a bit...
I'm not going to comment. I've thought about writing out a neel review, but there are some things that are, y'know, personal. HHGttG is one such thing.
[ neel shuts up ]
Helen: yeah, you're totally right. I'm indignant though, you can't stop me with mere facts...
"Not a screen play I would envy being in charge of. Might have changed the cast a bit..."
*THIS* is why I haven't been to see it....despite being possibly the worlds biggest 'guide geek known to man.
Facts are overrated.
Being right is not.
Hmmm I suppose that is a point about this version, it didn't feel too personal, it didn't feel like it belonged to anyone... quite like that... it wasn't particularly British, or even particularly Douglas... it's sort of distanced and diffused. Who does this movie belong to?
Joe: them's fightin' words!
