I'd be tempted to have them painted on. And then wait each day with anticipation for the shadows and the paint to match up.
It would only happen exactly the same once every year - and even then the trees would change.
You'd need solid trees and the determination to ensure that the Earth maintains a perfect orbit around the sun.
And that's why architects are so in love with white - because it's every colour when you unleash light and radiosity onto it.
