Want to find out about proteins? Try this for starters -
RCSB Protein data bank: Molecule of the Month in alphabetical order
Want to find out what is known about any particular gene? Here's a good place to start. -
Entrez Gene This is probably my favourite starting point for finding out about a new gene of interest and has handy links to most of the references and sequence information.
Want to find a piece of peer-reviewed scientific research? Want to check the references from an article, or look up the publication record of an expert quoted in a newspaper or blog piece? Try this database. It will give you the abstract (outline) of every paper and will link to the full thing and tell you which articles are free and open-access. -
NCBI's PubMed All newly published research is quickly added to this site.
Want to be able to decode DNA? This is how DNA codes for protein, and is, to my eyes, a thing of beauty. -
The Genetic Code (presented here as RNA. For DNA, simply replace the U's with T's (Uracil with Thymine)).
And for geeks who need to get out more :) -

Not that new! Must be a month? I'm wearing the boots I collected at the same time...
Still new to me. They're being worn properly for the first time today as my best shoes in all the world are in a very sorry state of repair and I've worn through the soles of my boots to the nails (which is quite painful after a while), so new shoes now in operation!
Helen - How are the boots?
Swamprose is right - it's the socks that make it :)
I love the colour combo
and have done the nail thinggie... although I usually only realise what has happened after discovering a hole in the sole of my foot
It happened the night I decided to walk home from work... The last mile was a little uncomfortable!
It's a shame as they are otherwise very good boots, but I have worn them pretty relentlessly for at least 2 years so it was bound to happen sooner or later.
I asked in the local cobblers and the man said no, they only do re-soling of the outsides. I did get some insole things to cover up the nails, which should last me a bit longer.
My left leg is about an inch longer than my right leg so I always wear down/destroy my left items of footwear first.
