you've inspired me to get a proper digital camera - did you buy yours new?

I have no idea what to get, but have a fairly limitied budget - (£200-£300).

yep, though mines a digital SLR, bought in America for almost half what it costs here I went for the SLR so I could interchange lenses and stuff, you can get a good one in your price range though, I'm no expert, but they're coming down in price daily from what I can tell.
