The smell of Church

(viewed 683 times)
St Michael's in Brussels. This time, I was struck by how Churches the world over smell the same - candle wax, books, polish ... and what else (?) ... all melding into a distinctive smell like nothing else. And somehow I don't think God would smell like that.

Anaesthetised in Brussels

(viewed 826 times)
First 3 - Brussels, buildings and views
4th - self portrait at 6.30am, hassled hotel for an early breakfast but I think I'll be eating it in my sleep. Gotta get that train to Brussels.

So I went to Brussels and spent a day wandering around. It might have been one of the dullest cities I have visited. I'm not sure what it was about it that didn't grab me. While Ghent was a beautiful town with some bland bits, Brussels seemed to be bland city with some beautiful bits. It was just a little snooze evocating. Perhaps in a different mood I would have enjoyed it more. But I was open to being wowed.

Best bit? recharging my batteries in the sun, sitting at an inner city cafe drinking duvel and eating gyros, watching the cafe hawkers and the people that try to ignore them.

Unnerved in Ghent

The Dr Guislain Museum in Ghent ... a psychiatric hospital museum which I think may be part of a still working psychiatric clinic. It's the oldest psych institution in Belgium.

It's not the first psych. hospital I've been too but even so this was a little disturbing at times (actually, I usually feel a little bugged out by psych. hospitals). You can wander through some of the wards and look at the different treatment approaches - they just make me wince and feel for the residents.

They also have sections put aside for 'outsider art' (read - created by people with mental health problems). Some of it is remarkable - for obsessive detail or insight and understanding - and some is just a little unnerving. It was worth an afternoon.

De Bron der Geknielden in Ghent ... maybe one of the saddest statues
I've seen.

Oh, it's bleached out because I messed up the white balance.
