On wheels

I had a spare day and so I rented a bike and cycled along the water front.

1 - I think this was a public bike. Does anyone know if Gothenberg has them?

2&3 - waterside stuff.

4 - I was waved down by someone with red flags. They were about to blow up the rocks, they said. Go and stand over there ... yes, you can take photos ... no, over there ... over there! So I waited and sirens went off and the air was filled with anticipation. Then there was this sound like a muffled fart and a heavy sheet made of metal railway sleepers tied together that was lying on the rocks rippled and a few puffs of smoke leaked out. Yeah. Anticlimax.

5 - Church. Red.

6 - Hello Buoys!

7 - you can see the face right?

8&9 - Roda Sten. An art gallery in a spooky old furnace house. Awesome building. Spooky industrial location. the curator told me she was impressed that I had found them and gave me a student discount. Cool, I still look like a student (actually I still am but I keep forgetting). Anyway, some quite unsettlingly obsessive pieces and some real pockets of beauty. Well worth a couple of hours.

A good day. But why does Sweden make me feel so Christmassy?

I woke up and I was still in Gothenburg

And I went up to the University and I was swallowed up for three days by people and talk and now it is all over except for a last night dinner.

Sweden is actually quite cool. The Swedish word for hello is 'Hey' and so everyone sounds like a hep cat. There are hardly any CCTV or signs bossing you around. Even the people working the bins are tall and blond and gorgeous. And for some reason, the country makes me feel very Christmassy.

I fell asleep and woke up in Gothenburg

I was meaning to go. It's just that I got up really early to catch the plane and so I had a little nap while in the air.

Not sure what to make of Gothenburg yet. It's a little like Ikea - clean, well designed and emotionally unengaging.

The old dress 'n' dash

Changing room shenanigans.

I really dislike shopping on the weekends.

Start of a new shoe year

New shoes, new uniform and new year. Back to school yesterday. I still get that first day at school feeling ... in sympathy now.

Prepare for take off

(viewed 671 times)
This is a funny time of year for me. Back from holiday, starting to get busy planning the year ahead but spending much time head down and writing. For the last five years, I've presented at the same conference and the paper I write usually pulls together some of the work I've been doing over the last 12 months. So it's a bit of a stock take. This year is no different except the research is still pretty raw and the paper has a few rough edges. I think it'll fly but feel it needs a bit of an airing. Hopefully, I'll get that next week.

Last days of summer

Daily Mail headline - ten days of rain! - got me to hustle everyone onto bikes to enjoy the sun. Can't be the last days of summer can it?

Anyway, this stone circle ain't for worship. It's for climbing. Now if only we could do free running at Stonehenge.

Phone dump

Feels like a time to tidy. We did the back garden today - the autumn feeling makes me want to do that. Some of the plants were done. Weren't going to give us any more. And dumped out the photos on my phone. My phone takes terrible photos.
