... this fact will have nothing to do with enjoying spinning teacups.

Cycling along the canal today.

I like the way that tidy boundaries between private home and public space are pretty blurry where canal boats are concerned.

A two cafe day

(viewed 207 times)
Last night Ruth and I had our shared 40th birthday party in a wine bar in town. A few friends stayed over and I caught up with them for morning coffee, then lunch with some other folk. Needing some quiet time, family went for a walk. The predicted snow would have been lovely and beguiling (I'm sure I saw a front page headline that suggested Siberian temperatures). Instead we got rain and cranky kids ... which drove us back to the coffee shop. Thought the hanging stars were pretty cool.

My family and other aliens

For a birthday treat we went to the Leicester Space Centre for one of their ‘premium events’. In other words, fans in sci fi costumes and a knot of celebrities signing photos. Was pretty fascinating for the most part. Love the atmosphere at these things. I got to chat to Rusty Goffe who played an Oompa Loompa in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory but had also been various creatures in Star Wars. Posed for photos with Stormtroopers and like last time , they barked ‘on your knees’ and there the photo was taken. Maybe they see something in my eyes that suggests this is how I pose for photos.

Took my seat for the immersive 360 degree multimedia experience narrated by Mark Hamill and instead found that the sci fi fans were staging a pantomime Ghostbusters meet a Leicester Ghost. Thinking this was the warm up for main event, the audience went along with the groanful jokes and accepted the American accents dropping into a Midlands one from time to time. And then house lights went up and the event was over. The audience were maaaad! Someone muttered, ‘I’ve paid 12 pounds for this’ and as I left I overheard another punter talking emphatically to the usher about ‘millions and millions of stars in the other one’ like a disappointed Carl Sagan. If it was France, they would have been building a bonfire out of the seats. Personally, I thought it was a hoot to be part of something truly craptastic.
