Sky Blu is a remote depot about 450 miles south of Rothera. It has a
natural blue-ice runway, which means that we can land our large Dash-7
aircraft there, which is very spectacular to watch. It's used as staging
post for the smaller Twin Otter aircraft, which can land on skis at
field campsites. I spent three days at Sky Blu in February, testing new
radio equipment.Life at Sky Blu revolves around the little red "melon" hut, in which you
sleep, cook and answer the radio. The hut sleeps three, so any other
visitors have to stay in tents.

This is the Royal Research Ship James Clark Ross, which bashed its way
through the sea ice to Rothera in late December. It was Captain Chris
Elliott's final voyage as master of the "JCR", so there was a big party
on base for him. The JCR brought us food, supplies, new staff, and beer!

At the end of March the RRS Ernest Shackleton came to do "last call" -
to take away all the staff not staying for the winter, and also to take
cargo and rubbish back to the UK. Those of us wintering stood on the
wharf and waved them off in style with out-of-date distress flares.

We've had strong winds recently, and the sea ice is beginning to break
up. This means more wildlife around base, as all the animals and birds
feed on marine creatures.
