Windows on hda1, linux on hda3, grub in mbr. Except windows wants it's bootloader in the mbr (and I don't want it there) so when grub tries to load windows, it can't find the windows bootloader. If I do fixmbr from the windows recovery console, grub crashes and windows doesn't load either.
The annoying thing is, I know I've fixed this kind of thing before, but I can't remember how I did it...
[edit] - Right. Install windows on hda1, thus recreating the (windows) mbr. Linux is no longer bootable. Boot from liveCD, remove grub, install lilo. Give lilo boot=/dev/hda and add /dev/hda1 as a boot option in lilo.conf. Run lilo. Reboot - job done. I believe this works OK with Grub if you install Windows first, then linux later. I didn't want to do that..
