Current view from my door

We're back on the Grand Canal, in a rather crowded harbour. The authorities have decided that enough was enough, and want to clear the basin for next year. But I like it like this. Maybe just clearing the jetty set aside for overnight stays would be enough. At the moment it's 3 boat deep with boats that never move...!

Leaking Lock

(viewed 497 times)
A few days ago.
Hawthorn gets in a lock, and it's taking a long time for the gate to shut. Till eventually, they refuse to close entirely, or open.
We call the lock keeper, who arrives within 10 minutes. The hydraulic system had been leaking. He went to get a few gallons of oil, came back and refilled the system immediately, so we could all get through. The engineer would fix it later. Waterways Ireland are really good that way.

Tied-up across Lough Ree

(viewed 329 times)
This morning we crossed Lough Ree. We tied up with Zorgen, as there was a bit of a breeze on the lake and the flat-bottom barge isn't made for wind and waves, specially with the bike on the back.
I enjoyed the crossing on a boat, a catamaran, almost 3 times as big!
Now we're in Athlone, which feels like the beginning of home, as the Grand Canal starts on this stretch of the Shannon. And we're on the 'net! 3mobile is as best erratic, but it seems a little better here. Might try to catch up with a few old events.
