H.P. Lovecraft lived in New York and hated it. I love it.
The sympathetic ground between us might have ended there, were it not for a sudden light being cast on his words about the horrific lost city of R'lyeh. One of the horrors of the demonic city he persistently mentions, but can never sensibly embellish, is that it was a city of diabolical geometry.
In The Call of Cthulhu the terrified sailors continually trip up as they try to escape the city they accidentally discovered. Their every move leads them further into an horrendous illusion, where distances seem to grow the more they cover, precipices become walls and reflections are chasms.
Although i could intuit what he meant, i could never visualise it. That is until yesterday when i saw these sights - i can almost see what Lovecraft (who seemed pretty paranoid) might have taken exception to (altho he is 1930s and probably none of this stuff was built till the 50s).
Particularly the top one- there is an almost dizzying effect where these huge buildings taper together the further up into the sky you look.

It's right near my current apartment. Shocks me in the morning. Awes me in the evening.
