So I'm currently messing around with Moblin 2 beta (
http://www.moblin.org).
For those who aren't aware, Moblin is a Linux based operating system
designed specifically for netbooks, I have an Asus eepc 901 netbook, and
have been running a full version of Ubuntu on it. Moblin caught my eye, so I
decided to give it a go. Here are my thoughts.
Pros
VERY quick, I can boot it, shut it down, boot it and shut it down again in
the time it takes my quad core desktop machine to get to a login screen.
It's very pretty and extremely easy to use, my grandma could probably update
her Twitter status on it....if she knew what the internet was.
Superb web integration, the "home screen" shows Tweets, updates from
last.fmand any IM messages I've received.
Cons
Horribly buggy, so buggy in fact that I'm a little embarrased for them, that
they called this a beta...
The extreme simplicity of the UI goes a little too far, for example, it is
imposible to re-scan for new wifi networks, and no way that I can see to
change a wifi password once you've entered it.
Hardware support for me was flaky, however my eeepc 901 has a notoriously
horrible wifi card in it.
Overall
Great idea, quite well implemented, needs lots of polishing....wait a few
months.
