Advice Needed

So. I am in the market for a new fancy digital camera. Trouble is i don't know much about what cameras there are and what bells and whistles they can come with. I figured you folk are clued up enough to be able to give me a hand and point me in the right direction. Please?
Ideally i'd like a camera with which i could manually control just about everything, particularly focus, exposure time and shutter speed. I'd also like a camera that could be used with a remote control, though not necessarily immediately; this could be a later purchase.
Money is an issue, as i don't have loads.
I've been looking mostly at Fujifilm, i think because of my current camera (see above.) This is the one i'm looking at currently: Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd

People Watching
I have been disgustingly busy and stressed lately. I even missed posting some kind of silly celebratory photo for my birthday. Rubbish.
But the day before my birthday i spent some time doing my very first attempt at a bit of people watching. As you can tell i was rather shy and spent most the time with my camera pointing at people's feet. I do have a rather funny one of an old man staring straight at me looking a bit puzzled, but these two are actually my favourite. For some reason?

So my lovely workmate that left was the medical secretary at work. Now she has gone... i am the medical secretary. Scary. But my first day at work without her and i found she had left this note on the keyboard. And of course i did :)
