Hello World!

Originally from the UK, I now live in the north of Sweden with Crickson

We are scientists :)

I also knit, bake and play the recorder, but not all at once.

Science resources:

Want to find out about proteins? Try this for starters - RCSB Protein data bank: Molecule of the Month in alphabetical order

Want to find out what is known about any particular gene? Here's a good place to start. - Entrez Gene This is probably my favourite starting point for finding out about a new gene of interest and has handy links to most of the references and sequence information.

Want to find a piece of peer-reviewed scientific research? Want to check the references from an article, or look up the publication record of an expert quoted in a newspaper or blog piece? Try this database. It will give you the abstract (outline) of every paper and will link to the full thing and tell you which articles are free and open-access. - NCBI's PubMed All newly published research is quickly added to this site.

Want to be able to decode DNA? This is how DNA codes for protein, and is, to my eyes, a thing of beauty. - The Genetic Code (presented here as RNA. For DNA, simply replace the U's with T's (Uracil with Thymine)).

And for geeks who need to get out more :) - The PCR Song and another PCR song

Good for your brain: - Ben Goldacre's Bad Science blog

It's the little things that keep you going...

Lincoln Ghost Walk

(viewed 6483 times)
A good night's story telling. Didn't see any ghosts although there is a mysterious shadowy figure in the foreground of the top shot. Hmmmm.

They could have just asked....

...me for a jelly baby, instead of smashing my window, cutting themselves, bleeding everywhere (just spots, but all over the place) and generally making a mess and causing me hassle for which I am not insured. Grrrr. He/she/they also took my car owner's manual, tyre pressure gauge, tyre tread depth gauge and first aid kit (presumably for the bleeding), but I'm most annoyed about the jelly babies. At least they left me my fire-extinguisher, foot pump, map book and squeaky haggis.
I have no idea why they tried to pull the air vent thing off the front of the poor little car. Will attempt more tidying up tomorrow, with thick gloves and Virkon, when I can see what I'm doing.
Still, at least I got chance to take macros of shattered glass...

Vancouver tea shop

(viewed 784 times)
This is where we got the tea balls/flowers and little oranges full of tea from in Vancouver (see Crickson's blog for pictures - must learn how to do links...). The people in the shop were really friendly and helpful.

There is a tea shop in Lincoln, on Steep Hill, which sells all sorts of tea including balls. There is a deli/cafe in Pocklington (afraid I can't remember the name) which was selling them also.
