This is my personal blog, not a venue for saleable images. In fact, because it's here that I share things that are important to me with the members of the moblog community, photo quality's not my priority. Events, occasions, achievements, thoughts, trips and experiments - you'll find them all here. Contact me for the development version of my photo portfolio, for a selection of saleable images or visit my dance photography blog or my website for cuttings. And remember that all photos remain my copyright unless I've specifically said otherwise.

"Never to get lost is not to live, not to know how to get lost brings you to destruction, and somewhere in the terra incognita in between lies a life of discovery."
........ Rebecca Solnit

"Give, give, give -- what is the point of having experience, knowledge or talent if I don't give it away? Of having stories if I don't tell them to others? Of having wealth if I don't share it? I don't intend to be cremated with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others, with the world and with the divine."
........ Isabel Allende

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs - ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
........ Harold Thurman Whitman

"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.. you have no such accurate remembrance of a country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle...."
........ Ernest Hemingway

"Ambition leads me not only father than any other man has been before me, but as far as I think it is possible for man to go."
........ James Cook

"The grand show is enternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never dried all at once; a shower is forever falling; vapour is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls."
........ John Muir

"The bicycle is the most civilised conveyance known to man. Other forms of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure in heart."
........ Iris Murdoch

"Photography for me is not looking, it's feeling. If you can't feel what you're looking at, then you're never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your picture...."
........ Don McCullin

Egypt: A cold weather antidote

Another article written for Dance Today, this one based on a trip to Sharm El Sheikh near enough this time last year (No Harm In Sharm)

It should have been done, with photos, the day before yesterday. I'm way behind :(

A quiet cabaret moment

(viewed 494 times)
So much is happening I don't have time to post here as much as I'd like. I'll be looping the loop for kids with cancer (VirginMoneyGiving.com/Dhamaka and GoingTitsUp.me), next week is the World Travel Market, we've changed the organisation structure of the travel writing cooperative and of course there's the regular rush to earn actual money... I've written a really difficult piece on swimming with the Beluga whales (I know the last piece I wrote for them was one of my best so the pressure to meet that standard again is huge), done another two pieces on the KALACC Aboriginal Dance Festival, have 2 more dance travel pieces to finish and am interviewing and shooting for a piece on cabaret this week.

This shot is from a cabaret run by my friends Milo Miles and Leonardo Greco of Milo Miles. There's more at my Dance Tog Blog

Help Me Go Tits Up!

(viewed 1134 times)
I woke up this morning feeling sick to the stomach. Not because I'm ill (at least not as far as I know) but because on October 31st, the last day of Breast Cancer Month, I'm going to loop the loop in a Sukhoi29 in aid of Cyclists Fighting Cancer

This will make me the first person ever to have tested their post-mastectomy silicon implant to 3-4 gravities.

I've never been this scared before. Even the breast cancer didn't have me waking up of a morning wondering what on Earth I have done.

Please make this month of terror worthwhile by sharing this post and donating. These are hard times, but if all you can give is a pound, that donation will still help. www.virginmoneygiving.com/Dhamaka Carole Vatrena

And let's see if we can get this message viral because it's not just about money. Share it. Tweet it. Talk about it. PLEASE!When I go tits up in an airplane I'll be showing the world that having cancer doesn't turn us into victims.

I ask you once again, please help.

Meet the Fokkens

(viewed 1000 times)
I spent the morning acting as translator for the two 70 year-old Dutch prostitutes when they came to London to appear in ITV's This Morning. They didn't really need me, and were lovely ladies.

It was rather surreal.

Next time they're in London I've promised to take them out for an English cream tea.
